Marriage Research

There has been a great deal of marriage research which shows what factors are positives and negatives to having an ongoing marriage. Some of these are age of marriage, education of parties, whether religion is part of their lives, whether it’s a first or second (or subsequent) marriage for either or both of the parties.

Other factors are cohabitation before the marriage, the existence of children from a previous marriage, having children in the new marriage, whether your parents got divorced, and the unemployment of a spouse or financial problems.

Spouse can overcome any of these risk factors by attention to their marriage, learning how to reduce conflict, and learning how to listen and respect each other. Many couples who have overcome great adversity report that their marriages are strengthened by it.
